When University Scientists Found Underwater Oil Plumes, the Government Said Shut Up, Don't Tell Anyone ... and Then Tried to Discredit Them

Washington's Blog

As I've previously reported, a senior EPA policy analyst says that NOAA and the EPA have been "sock puppets" for BP.

NOAA has repeatedly denied the existence of underwater oil plumes (see this and this), calculated the spill to be only 5,000 barrels a day, and buried core data on the oil spill.

Now, university scientists have revealed the NOAA used strong-arm tactics to try to silence any information on underwater plumes. As the St. Petersburg Times reports:

The reaction that [the University of South Florida] announcement [of the discovery of huge underwater plumes] received from the Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agencies that sponsored their research:

Shut up.

"I got lambasted by the Coast Guard and NOAA when we said there was undersea oil," USF marine sciences dean William Hogarth said. Some officials even told him to retract USF's public announcement, he said, comparing it to being "beat up" by federal officials.

The USF scientists weren't alone. Vernon Asper, an oceanographer at the University of Southern Mississippi, was part of a similar effort that met with a similar reaction. "We expected that NOAA would be pleased because we found something very, very interesting," Asper said. "NOAA instead responded by trying to discredit us. It was just a shock to us."

NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, in comments she made to reporters in May, expressed strong skepticism about the existence of undersea oil plumes — as did BP's then-CEO, Tony Hayward.

"She basically called us inept idiots," Asper said. "We took that very personally."

Lubchenco confirmed Monday that her agency told USF and other academic institutions involved in the study of undersea plumes that they should hold off talking so openly about it. "What we asked for, was for people to stop speculating before they had a chance to analyze what they were finding," Lubchenco said. "We think that's in everybody's interest. … We just wanted to try to make sure that we knew something before we speculated about it."

"We had solid evidence, rock solid," Asper said. "We weren't speculating." If he had to do it over again, he said, he'd do it all exactly the same way, despite Lubchenco's ire.

USF's first NOAA-sponsored voyage to take samples after Deepwater Horizon, the one that turned up evidence of the undersea plumes, was designed to gather evidence for use in an eventual court case against BP and other oil companies involved in the disaster. At the end of the voyage, USF turned its samples over to NOAA, expecting to get either a shared analysis or the samples themselves back. So far, Hogarth said, they've received neither.

NOAA's top oil spill scientist, Steve Murawski, said Monday that he was "sure we will release the data" at some point. However, he said, because NOAA has collected so many samples over the past three months, when it comes to the samples from USF's trip in May, "I'm not sure where they are."

A government official named "Lubchenco" strong-arming scientists to toe the party line, and a government agency "losing" samples instead of sharing results with the scientists who had taken them.

Sounds like the Soviet Union, doesn't it?

Too bad it's America.

Dead Fish Are Washing Up Everywhere...Is it Due To BP Oil Gusher?

Dead Fish Are Washing Up Everywhere . . . Is It Due to BP Oil Spill and Dispersants?

Washington's Blog

Dead fish are washing up everywhere.

For example, numerous dead fish washed ashore in Massachusetts a couple of days ago:

Dead fish had washed up in New Jersey yesterday.
Hundreds of thousands of dead fish washed up today in New Jersey, and even the birds wouldn't eat them:

(The second report in this video compilation - referring to a ripped fishing net - is actually from Virginia, some 210 miles from the scene of the first report in New Jersey. The size of the Virginia fish incident was much smaller than the one in New Jersey.)

And they have washed up in Mississippi as well.

There are also several reports of tar balls washing up on beaches prior to fish or crab kills. See this and this. And see this.

Scientists attribute the dead fish to low oxygen levels in the Gulf of Mexico.

Indeed, scientists have been warning about this for months. For example, on May 16th, the New York Times wrote:

Scientists are finding enormous oil plumes in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, including one as large as 10 miles long, 3 miles wide and 300 feet thick in spots. The discovery is fresh evidence that the leak from the broken undersea well could be substantially worse than estimates that the government and BP have given.

“There’s a shocking amount of oil in the deep water, relative to what you see in the surface water,” said Samantha Joye, a researcher at the University of Georgia who is involved in one of the first scientific missions to gather details about what is happening in the gulf. “There’s a tremendous amount of oil in multiple layers, three or four or five layers deep in the water column.”

The plumes are depleting the oxygen dissolved in the gulf, worrying scientists, who fear that the oxygen level could eventually fall so low as to kill off much of the sea life near the plumes.

Russia Burns: (Radiation Alert)

August 13, 2010 by Mark Sircus

Into The Ashes

A hasty evacuation of diplomatic staff from foreign embassies, like a stampede, began in Moscow. Many embassies are trying to hide the evacuation for political reasons. Mass evacuation of the embassies of Canada and Poland was officially reported at night on August 7. Russia is sending 10,000 children and hundreds of elderly to Bulgaria and the Ukraine to save them from the smoldering heat and overpowering smog in Moscow, the city’s Mayor, Yriy Luzhkov, announced Tuesday. Seventeen regions of Russia are currently aflame. Seven of them, including the Moscow region, have declared a state of emergency.

Physicians have urged Muscovites to avoid leaving their homes.
They warn that breathing the toxic air for just a couple of hours
has the same harmful effect as smoking two packs of cigarettes.

The U.S. State Department is allowing nonessential staff and dependents of the embassy in Moscow to leave if they want. Carbon monoxide in the Moscow air was 1.4 times higher than acceptable levels Tuesday, the state pollution watchdog said, a slight improvement from the day before. On Saturday the levels had been an alarming 6.6 times worse. The Canadian government has also initiated a partial evacuation of embassy staff and family members from Moscow due to the choking smog caused by raging fires around Russia’s capital. Foreign Ministries of Germany, Bulgaria, France, Italy and other countries also appealed to their citizens not to travel to Russia.

Russia fought a deadly battle Tuesday to prevent wildfires from engulfing key nuclear sites as alarm mounted over the impact on health of a toxic smoke cloud shrouded over Moscow. Russian troops dug a five-mile canal yesterday to protect one of the nuclear sites. Bulgaria’s EU commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said that the EU is strongly concerned about the situation in Russia where wildfires have been raging for almost two weeks. “We are viewing the problem in Russia as something very grave, for as we all can see it affects the life and health of many people,” stated Georgieva.

Soil pollution results from the buildup of contaminants, toxic compounds, radioactive materials, salts, chemicals and cancer-causing agents. The most common soil pollutants are hydrocarbons, heavy metals (cadmium, lead, chromium, copper, zinc, mercury and arsenic), herbicides, pesticides, oils, tars, PCBs and dioxins.

The forest floor in Russia holds heavy concentrations of radioactive particles that settled after more than several nuclear disasters. We don’t need environmentalists to remind and warn us that radiation plus a full ensemble of chemicals and heavy metals could be thrown into the air by the fires raging across western and central Russia. The particles could then be blown far and wide into other areas by the wind creating a nuclear incident of unexpected proportions.

Russian fires threaten to stir Chernobyl radiation.

The Hindenberg Omen Indicates Stock Market Crash Coming

The Hindenburg Omen Indicates Stock Market Crash is Coming
Activist Post

On Thursday August 12, the US equities market triggered a confirmed technical indicator known as the “Hindenburg Omen." This omen, as you may have guessed, suggests that a stock market crash is on the way. However, it doesn’t mean just any crash -- according to Albert Edwards, a London-based strategist at Societe Generale SA, the indicator means “a savage equity downturn is imminent."

The level of attention and significance given to this omen is truly unparalleled in the world of technical analysis, and for good reason.
Every NYSE crash since 1985 has been preceded by a Hindenburg Omen.
Based on historical stats, the probability of a panic sellout is 41%, while the probability of a major stock market crash is 24%.
Out of the previous 25 confirmed signals, only 8% (two) have failed to predict at least a mild decline in equities markets.
The probability of a move greater than 5% to the downside after a confirmed Hindenburg Omen is 77%, and usually takes place within the next 40 days.
As a result, the Hindenburg Omen is indeed the most feared indicator for Wall Street bulls. However, when the infamous omen starts showing itself two times in two days, that’s when things can get really scary.

The Fourfold Judgment of God

The Fourfold Judgment of God
Watchman's Warning: This article has some disturbing content!
Nathan Leal - December 5, 2008

If we could survey the general population of America and ask for their opinion on the present economic crisis, we would hear a lot of different theories. The theories would range from clueless, to very scientific exposés on the economy.

I am confident that God would rarely be mentioned and it would be no surprise because man's nature is to deny God's involvement in human affairs.

But in spite of all the opinions, I have a different announcement which holds true. What we are witnessing right now is the judgment of God.

The foolish heart of man will never realize or admit this.

How many people in today's American population would admit that God is judging America? I am convinced that the number would be very small and very close to zero. The news media is not going to say it. Most pastors in today's pulpits are certainly not going to say it. Nor are the preachers on your Christian TV!

Fortunately, there is a small remnant in the body of Christ that is awake to what is going on right now. Hopefully that is you. In addition to those that are awake, there are also others that are waking up.

Many of the people that are awake want to know what to expect in the days ahead.
